The Evolution of Earthworm Jim: A Retro Gaming Franchise

In the early 1990s, the video game industry was dominated by the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog, with its lightning-fast speed and colorful graphics. Inspired by this success, Playmates Toys, known for their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, set out to create their own iconic character. Thus, Earthworm Jim was born.

The first Earthworm Jim game was released in 1994, featuring a humble earthworm named Jim who donned a robotic suit to battle against the forces of evil. The series quickly gained popularity for its unique blend of platforming and shooting gameplay, combined with its surreal humor and edgy art style. Two more games followed, Earthworm Jim 2 and Earthworm Jim 3D, before the franchise went dormant.

In 2010, Gameloft remade the original game in HD, releasing it on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade. This revival sparked a renewed interest in the series, leading to the announcement of Earthworm Jim 4 in 2008 – although little information was shared until May 2019 and August 2020.

The franchise has since remained relatively quiet, with only four games released: Earthworm Jim, Earthworm Jim 2, Earthworm Jim 3D, and Earthworm Jim: Menace 2 the Galaxy. Despite this, the series remains beloved by retro gaming enthusiasts, who fondly remember its zany humor, challenging levels, and lovable protagonist.
